About Zanzar Navratri

Nine nights of garba in Palanpur, hosted by the Rotary Club of Palanpur Diamond City

Who We Are

Zanzar Navratri is hosted by the Rotary Club of Palanpur Diamond City. A Rotary club exists to serve the place it belongs to, and for nine nights each autumn this one turns Navratri into a celebration the whole town is invited to.

Navratri means nine nights — nights kept for the Goddess in her nine forms. In Gujarat they are kept with garba: a ring of dancers moving around a lamp, clapping the beat, the ring widening as more people step into it.

That is the thing we set out to hold on to. Not a stage with an audience in front of it, but a ground where anyone who wants to dance can join the circle — the same steps, the same songs, the same nine nights.

The Tradition

What the nine nights are, and what is danced through them

The Garbo

The circle turns around a garbo — a perforated earthen pot with a lamp lit inside it. The clay stands for the body and the flame for the life within; the holes are what let the light out.

Garba

Danced in a ring around that lamp, to a clap and a turning step. There is no partner and no choreography — you join where the circle has room and pick the step up from the person in front of you.

Dandiya Raas

The stick dance. Two rings turn against each other and partners strike dandiya on the beat as they pass, changing partner with every turn of the circle.

Nine Nights

Navratri is nav ratri — nine nights, each given to one of the nine forms of the Goddess, and each with a colour the floor wears that evening. Ours run 11 Oct - 19 Oct.

On the Night

What to expect when you come

Nine nights on one pass

A Family Pass covers all 9 nights for four people. A One Day Pass covers a single evening — come for the night that suits you.

Competitions every night

Garba and dandiya competitions run through the festival, and Family Pass holders get priority entry to them.

A Gujarati food court

Traditional snacks and drinks on site through the evening, with free parking at the venue.

Come dressed for it

Traditional attire is what the floor looks best in — chaniya choli and kediyu — and the colour of the day is the one to aim for.
